july 2015

I have the privilege of being selected as Artist of the Month to represent River City Art Association for the month of July at the Vigo County Public Library. Several of my abstracts will be on exhibit. These will be paintings that have received recognition and/or awards in area galleries and shows.

Abstract art is an exciting visual experience for the art patron, and a wonderful means of creative expression for the artist.
Contemporary abstract art can be defined in many ways – but it is generally a term used for non-representational art. That is – art that is expressed through unique uses of the traditional artistic modes of form, color, line, balance, shape, and value.

Abstract art developed out of the cultural and technological changes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The movement grew and achieved prominence during and after WW II. It has since become a well-accepted form of art, with many types and styles.
Most abstract art can be placed along a continuum extending from a recognizable abstraction of reality – to a total geometric or lyrical form.

The abstract oil paintings I create develop from a desire to show a unique blend of color and movement, intended to bring a unique visual impact that will evoke an emotional response as well as artistic enjoyment. Among the various abstract movements – my style would be considered Abstract Expressionism.

Abstracts painted in oil can be especially dramatic – since the medium enables a variety of brushstrokes – both in direction and movement of brush, thickness of paint, layering of colors and/or blending of colors. The intensity of color possible with oils gives each painting a vibrancy that adds to the visual impact.

Bob and Ellie Haan of Lafayette conduct tours of their beautiful home, also known as the Haan Museum, 920 E. State St Lafayette. The home is one of the few surviving buildings from the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. It was dismantled and moved to Lafayette after the fair closed. The stately home is filled with collections of oil paintings from artists who worked in Indiana, as well as rare and valuable antiques from the 19th and 20th centuries. Memberships are available on line, as well as dates to tour the home.

Indiana Art

Over the years the Haan's have amassed a huge collection of paintings by the most important artists that painted in Indiana. Specializing in major oils that best represent the work of an artist, over 100 artists are represented in the collection. As with any museum, not all of the paintings can be hung at the same time, and the most important works are selected for display. There are over 100 paintings hung at any one time.

The Hoosier Group is a designation given to five artists in 1894 at an exhibition in Chicago. Steele, Adams, Forsyth, Stark, and Gruelle comprise this most important group of Indiana artists, and they are the most represented artists on display in the mansion.

The second important group are the members of the Brown County Art Colony. Starting in 1907, many artists came to Nashville, Indiana, to paint for the season or establish permanent residences. The best of these artists are Ada and Adolph Shulz, Will Vawter, Edward K Williams, Lucie Hartrath, and Adam Emory Albright. T. C. Steele's move to Brown County in 1907 helped establish the colony, but he was 60 at the time and did not integrate into the art scene like the other artists.

Many other artists such as Bundy and Eggemeyer from Richmond, pioneer painters Hays and Cox, and regionalist painters Davis and Floyd Hopper are on display.

Halcyon Contemporary Art Gallery at Swope Art Museum in Terre Haute – March 1 – 29 “ Halcyon Days” A juried exhibition open to Indiana artists as well as those in Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.

“This is the eighth in a series of juried exhibitions showcasing the best of contemporary art in all media. The juror Ray Chen, Curator and Executive Director of Exhibitions has selected the theme and describes it this way: “Halcyon Days” opens up a conversation between peoples and cultures. The communication shares an artistic language; conceptual as in the definition of a medium and the desire to strictly or loosely define an artistic form; an interpretation as a personal artistic language, a conversation to share, a message to state, a movement of shadows to follow, colors unpredictably to change, visual reaction from tradition to contemporary, a choice, an action, visible, invisible, intentional, expressive… Artists are invited to consider the broad concept of the theme.”

The Halcyon Contemporary Art Gallery is constructed to deliver a space to create, accommodate, and promote. The North gallery space of 1200 sq. ft. allows us to feature contemporary artists working in a wide range of media. The Project Room features experimental art including Sound and New Media installations. Our focus is on regional artists living and working in the Midwest. We offer painting, indoor and outdoor sculpture, works on paper and photography to those considering their first acquisition as well as to the seasoned art collector.
The mission of Halcyon is to become a leader in the exhibition of contemporary visual art. Halcyon encourages experimentation through the presentation of new works by emerging and established artists. Through exhibitions reflecting current issues and practices in the visual arts, the Gallery is dedicated to the cultural enrichment of Vigo County, the state of Indiana, and the Midwest region.
